I find this show so comforting. I love the idea that Emily, at least five years into living abroad, seems to only now be considering the challenges that might arise from long-term partnership with someone from across an ocean; that she’s able to get a job where she’s warmly teased for her horrible French but otherwise fêted for her workaholism and unflagging insistence that everyone, even Italian countryside nonnas, should really be building a presence on Instagram; and that she – even in her worst moments of cross-cultural indignity – is so determinedly cheerful, unwilling to assimilate, and Zen-like in her capacity for forgiveness, which is another way of saying never sour, resentful, and grudge-holding against the snobby Europeans who have spurned her like, well, me.
