I’d offer that Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein is a movie about manhood and masculinity: about the male loneliness epidemic, certainly (the Creature begs his maker for companionship), as well as cycles of father-son violence and neglect. In this iteration of the Frankenstein story, we are also pushed to the very brink of the female gaze, forced to ask ourselves questions like: what if Victor Frankenstein had a six pack? and what if a cold grey alien type had a tastefully-placed but super-tight loincloth?
