i got married last summer and there is absolutely nothing like how beautifully overwhelming it is to spend the whole day being swirled around by different loved ones who want to hug and chat and say hi. my husband and i both knew the day would be both amazing and a whirlwind, so we had a quiet morning of drinking coffee and taking a slow walk around the block: time to connect and simply be together. ask how he's feeling and listen to the answer. ask follow-up questions. tell him what you love about him and why you know you're making the right decision: it's different from the vows, because it's just for you. (trust, of course, that he'll do the same and ask/listen/share in return.) weddings and marriage are so different, and it felt nice to have a part of the day that was not just symbolic or festive, like the ceremony and party, but actually enacting the life path we were choosing to take together
